We nearly stepped on this 24" Eastern Garter Snake while hiking in Hubbardston on 4/15. It very likely had only recently emerged from winter hibernation and was still cold and lethargic. Today's sunshine and air temperatures up to 70 degrees F. provided the biological triggers.

A snake with a warmer body temperature would not have allowed such a close approach.
